7 Tips for Eating Organic Without Breaking the Bank

We all know the benefits of organic food, but we often believe that its price makes it out of reach. While it is true that organic is generally more expensive, this does not mean that you must necessarily explode the budget to eat.

Indeed, just know that with some good tips and tricks and changing some of our habits you can get to eat organic while keeping a reasonable budget.

1. Grow your own fruits and vegetables

This is surely the most logical advice, but it is important to emphasize it.

Having your own vegetable garden will allow you to make huge savings. But if you have neither space nor the time to manage and maintain a large garden, you can consider putting in only a few pots at home. This will not prevent you from continuing to buy fruits and vegetables, but you can buy them in smaller quantities. While enjoying, at home, a portion of truly organic food at your fingertips!

2. Buy in bulk as soon as possible

Already packaged products are more expensive because you pay for the packaging too. But that’s not all: packaging can jeopardize the organic character of the food that is enclosed because some of them are made of toxic materials. These then end up on the food that you believe is a bio, which can be harmful to your health! It is, therefore, doubly important to avoid packaging.

If you can not find enough bulk food in your supermarket, go for a tour of organic stores and specialty stores.

You’ll see it, some bulk products will cost up to half as much as the same packaged product! It’s worth looking at bulk, right?

3. Buy only what you need

Who says organic says absence of conservatives. So even if large quantities are on sale, always ask yourself if you really need them before putting them in your basket. If you buy perishable products in too large quantities, chances are you’ll end up throwing them away before you can eat them. And that’s what’s called throwing money in the trash!

Eating organic, also involves reviewing the diet. Do not miss out on expensive cookies you do not need, for example.

For this, a golden tip: avoid shopping when you are hungry. We all know, we always want to buy more than what is necessary when we want to eat!

Where you can focus on large quantities, however, it is in frozen products and non-perishable products… Without, however, falling into excess, of course.

4. Buy your food in the right place

You are likely to buy everything at the same supermarket. But to eat cheaper, you have to do some research.

On the supermarket side, keep an eye out for discounts – without forgetting the previous tip! Sometimes, by going to a different supermarket, you could do very good business.

But do not forget also that there is a wide variety of food shops outside the supermarkets. Go, for example, to visit the local butcher: it may well be that their meat is cheaper than the butcher shop at the supermarket. As for fruits and vegetables, try to buy them at the market, if you have the possibility. In addition to paying less, it’s always nice to walk among the stalls of traders, right?

Finally, note also that prices for the same category of product can sometimes vary enormously according to criteria such as the origin of the product. So take the time to compare the different alternatives.

5. Eat local and seasonal

It is cheaper, it will allow you to support local farmers and you will surely rediscover many fruits and vegetables that you no longer used to eat! Also, seasonal products are generally much tastier because they have benefited from the right environment to grow.

Be careful: it does not mean that the products will be organic. So make sure of their organic character before buying them.

On this point, it is important to note an important remark. First of all, products that come from regions far from yours, are far from being truly organic. Indeed, even if they were marketed without chemicals, they had to be transported by plane or truck, which generates additional pollution. As for products that are not in season, they have surely grown in unnatural situations, and therefore less organic.

6. Cook more

A dish prepared by us is always cheaper than the same organic dish bought at the supermarket. And chances are your dish is also healthier!

If you do not have time to cook every night, there are several options available to you. On the one hand, you can cook very fast and easy-to-make dishes, such as pasta or quiche. On the other hand, you can cook for several days at once and put the leftovers in the fridge or freezer to eat them when you will not have time to cook.

7. Reduce your meat consumption

We all know, meat is expensive. If you are the type to eat every day, it is a big part of your food budget. However, by eating only a few times a week, not only will you do good for your wallet, but you will also serve your body, which does not need as much meat.

Finally, when you buy meat, why not choose cheaper pieces? They are generally considered to be of lesser quality or less attractive but are just as good. Just know how to cook them!
